Dessert: Billy’s Bakery

Eating Out

Sweet. Rich. Soft and sumptuous. It’s a weakness I have no desire to overcome, gratification that I don’t have the willpower to delay. And I’m not alone. The S.A.T.C. gals licked them. The Olsen Twins hawked them. A certain flower-named shop built a business on them, and has spawned more illegitimate children than Wilt Chamberlain. You know what I’m talking about.

But, with a hip new bakeshop on every corner, each with the requisite endorsement from New York Magazine/Daily Candy/Size 0 Actress, how is a picky palate to choose? Fear not, dear readers, NoshGirl is on it.

My first stop of my multi-cupcake tour was to Billy’s Bakery.  Walking into Billy’s Bakery is like taking a step 50 years back in time. With locations in both Chelsea and Tribeca, Billy’s offers pies, cheesecakes and other goodies, all in a old-fashioned kitchen setting. Despite these tempting choices, we were focused on a goal – finding the perfect cupcake.

My eating buddy and I shared a chocolate frosting/vanilla cake and a vanilla/vanilla. The cake for each was neither too crumbly nor dense, but the buttercream frosting was a bit too sweet for my taste.  There was so much confectioners sugar in the frosting that each bite had a slightly powdery consistency! While I certainly won’t turn down a Billy’s cupcake if placed in front of me, the texture of the frosting would make me think twice….then eat it.

Stay tuned for more of my cupcake adventures…

Frosting is a bit too sweet, but worth a try.

I wasn't too impressed with Billy's myself. Have you tried Buttercup? I usually only like Magnolia's for their banana pudding.

I've tried Buttercup; I love the texture and consistency of their frosting. They are actually the same recipe as the Magnolia ones, but they are different consistencies and moisture levels, strangely. Neither is my very fave though 🙂

I just love cupcakes in general. In SF I recently discovered Kara's cupcakes and really like them. The cake is much more moist than Sprinkles.

I would have loved to see pics of this place, it sounds groovy retro. We're finally starting to see cupcake bakeries pop up in the south. I'm so happy! 🙂

Hi! I agree about billy's chocolate and vanilla with buttercream… but i really must insist that you try Billy's banana cupcakes. Really dense cream cheese frosting, and on a good day, the cake is the moistest I have ever had. It is my favorite cupcake in NYC (and like you, I am on a cupcake quest)!
