2010 Wrap-Up

December 28, 2010 By: Serena Category: NoshGirl

Hope everyone had a great holiday season!  I know I over-indulged a bit on my part, but what would the holidays be without a little gluttony?  As the year winds down, I’d like to thank all of you for following Big Apple Nosh!  When I started this site just 7 months ago, I never guessed I’d “meet” readers from all over the US and across the globe.  I’ve got some new and exciting things planned for 2011, so stay tuned!

In the mean time, I’ll be savoring the truffle salt and truffle oil from Marx Foods (prize shipment #2 for winning the Mushroom Challenge!) and finalizing New Year’s plans.  Keep an eye out for some recipes!

What’s on your agenda for the rest of the year?

xoxo,
Noshgirl

Recipe: Salted Caramel Brownies

December 22, 2010 By: Serena Category: Dessert, Recipes

Yesterday I posted on my Twitter account yesterday (do you follow me? You should) about making a holiday dessert – I loooove dessert!  Based on your comments, I decided to make salted caramel brownies.  As you know, I’m a huge fan of salted caramel – the salty and sweet combination is so indulgent! I was going to put together a recipe, but as it turns out, the Pioneer Woman already had a pretty good one, which she had in turn borrowed.  Well, if ain’t broke, don’t fix it – so I borrowed the borrowed.  The result? Scrumptiousness.  The caramel is a little tricky if you’re a newbie, but the result is soooooo worth it!  You will need:

Dessert: The Chocolate Room

‘Tis the season for hot cocoa!  I thought it was high time for another dessert post.  Speaking of dessert, I’m thinking of posting a Christmas/holiday dessert recipe this week. Any suggestions?  Yule log, perhaps?

Anyway, continuing on – after my hot dog excursion at Bark, I wandered into The Chocolate Room.  I was not familiar with The Chocolate Room at all, but with a name like that, how could I go wrong?

Chicago Chow: Garrett Popcorn

During my first trip to Chicago two years ago, I was told that Garrett Popcorn was an absolute must-try.  The Chicago mix, in particular, is the stuff of legend – sweet caramel popcorn mixed with cheddar popcorn.  I tried it and was absolutely addicted.  Well, lo and behold – there’s a Garrett in NYC!  Oh NoshGirl, you’re so silly.  What is it that’s so amazing about Garrett? Where do I even begin…

Chicago Chow: Silver Palm’s

Continuing on my Chicago eat-stravaganza, my next stop was Silver Palm’s.  I was here for one thing and one thing only – the three little piggy sandwich.  Just take a look at that monstrosity! (And I mean that in the best possible way).  Intrigued?  So was I…

Chicago Chow: Hot Doug’s

This past weekend, I paid a short visit to Chicago to visit some friends.  While there, I checked out a few of the city’s best specialties (hot dogs and pizza, of course!). This week, I’ll be profiling some of the best nosh in the windy city.  Sure I was stranded for an extra day when the snowstorm hit the Midwest, but was it worth it? You betcha!  I first started out at Hot Doug’s.   The above foie gras dog was just one of the joint’s numerous offerings. Intrigued? Keep reading…

Event: miniPop Tasting at Popbar

December 07, 2010 By: Serena Category: Dessert, Events

Yesterday, I had the yummy opportunity to preview popbar‘s latest product – the miniPop!  I’d never tried a popbar before, so I was really excited for this event.  Who doesn’t love food on sticks!

Hot Dogs: Bark

December 06, 2010 By: Serena Category: 2_Apples, American, Fast_Food, Hot_Dogs, Sandwiches

I recently made a trip to Park Slope in the name of hot dogs.  Offering much more than your corner Sabrett cart, Bark features locally sourced meats, bread, dairy and even furniture.  I was intrigued by this concept, but how did the dogs measure up?

Casual: FoodParc – CLOSED

I’ll admit it – eating out in a group is sometimes a big pain.  You’ve got diversity of palates and appetites, different price points, and the dreaded awkward multi-person bill split at the very end (please don’t tell me that I’m the only one who has handed a waiter 7 people’s credit cards before).  We do it because it’s great to catch up with friends, or you’re eating with coworkers, or well, it’s just more fun to eat with others.

Well, the recently opened FoodParc, a casual dining option in Chelsea, addresses those issues.  With four different food areas (burgers, Chinese, Italian and cafe) and a unique and simple ordering system, FoodParc offers superb quality at affordable prices. I recently created my own four-course meal at FoodParc, including that mouth-watering burger above. What else did I devour? Keep reading…

Italian: Eataly

December 01, 2010 By: Serena Category: Italian

So I finally visited Eataly, the much-hyped Italian mega-world-store backed by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich.  Eataly offers anything you can possibly want in terms of Italian ingredients, as well as a wine bar, pizza restaurant and other dining options.  It was bright, lively, and full of delicious aromas.  Yet all I could think was:
