February 25, 2011 By: Serena Category: Dessert, Recipes

Update: I’m advancing to the next round! Thanks for your support, everyone!

Before I had left for Singapore, I had posted my first entry for the Marx Foods Ridiculously Delicious Challenge. Well, guess what – I advanced, wheee!! I was super excited for Round 2, which featured a “mystery box” (oooOOOoooh) of eight ingredients.

My mission (I chose to accept it): Use 2 of the 8 ingredients in an original dish.

GAME ON!

I bet you’re wondering what the mysterious box contained – well wonder no further:

OMG A CHOCO CAT!!

Super cool.  But wait, there’s more – this is a *fortune* cat.  Yes, that’s right, like its cookie counterpart, there’s a fortune hidden inside this feline confection.  How did I happen upon this lil’ guy?  Allow me to back up just a bit…

Brunch: The Little Owl

Any Friends fans out there?  How many of you recognize this street corner?

I’m baaaaack!  While I’m still fighting off the vestiges of jetlag from my return to Singapore (it’s 3:30am as I write this!), I thought I’d share some of my local NYC eating adventures.  A few weekends ago, I visited this cute little red and blue restaurant for brunch.  Known as the little owl, this quaint joint offers classic dishes in an intimate, cozy setting.  While there was a bit of a wait, it wasn’t outrageous (and allowed me to take a few outside shots!).  When I finally sat down, I perused the menu and started with the whole wheat pancakes with seasonal berries and maple syrup:

My Meeting with Makansutra Founder K.F. Seetoh!

February 11, 2011 By: Serena Category: Singaporean

Recognize this guy?

I had mentioned in my 2010 wrap-up post that I had some exciting things up my sleeve for 2011, so I’m thrilled to share one of them with you!  Yesterday I got to sit down and eat with one of Singapore’s leading food critics – K.F. Seetoh.  His Makanustra guide and rating system is known all over Singapore – and in a land inhabited by foodies, this is saying something!  A champion of the local hawker center food culture, Seetoh is the go-to resource for Singaporean cuisine.  You might have seen him on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations: Singapore episode, introducing Samantha Brown to the best laksa in town, and most recently in Top Chef’s season finale in Singapore!  Needless to say, I was super excited.

Per Seetoh’s suggestion, we headed out for….

Singapore Food Hop!

February 10, 2011 By: Serena Category: Dessert, Singaporean

As you may know by now, I’m a huge fan of food hopping – the more places I get to sample, the better!  Singapore is perfect for food hopping because there are SO many snack and dessert (oh, the dessert!) stalls to try.  Yesterday, I was lucky enough to have Singapore local and blog star Valerie show me some of her favorite food finds.

Our first stop was to Mr. Bean for some soya ice cream (first photo).

Recipe: Red Velvet Whoopie Pies

February 09, 2011 By: Serena Category: Dessert, Recipes

So I had made red velvet whoopie pies a while ago (before the days of this blog), and thought in the spirit of Valentine’s Day and red and desserts and all that, I’d give it another go.  Now who of you guys are red velvet fans? Raise those hands high!

I love whoopie pies because in addition to the fun to say name (Whoopie pie. Say it, you won’t regret it), they are super easy to make, look cute, and combine two favorite food categories – sandwiches and desserts.  The mom of one of my former classmates is actually Pennsylvania Amish (where these lil’ pies originated) and I’ve been dying to get her recipe – the ones I made last time were AWESOME (if I do say so myself, haha) but required a lot of tweaking and substitution on my part to get them exactly how I wanted.  I promise once I have the exact recipe nailed down, I’ll post it.  However, in the mean time, this one from Better Homes & Gardens had to do (I do sub in cream cheese filling though).  So let’s jump right in, shall we?

Halfway Around the World, But Still Plugged In.

February 07, 2011 By: Serena Category: NoshGirl

So it’s my second day in Singapore, and I’ve (hopefully, knock on wood) beaten jetlag, conking out at 10pm yesterday night and waking up at 7am tomorrow.  Yeah…still a little earlier than I’d like to wake up, but a reasonable hour for most. ;)

Even though I’m halfway around the world, I’ll still be connected so make sure you follow along with my eating escapades via the Big Apple Nosh twitter page, Facebook page, and this blog! for photos and video updates!  I won’t be posting the same stuff on each page, so you’ll want to check out all three (SHAMELESS, I know. ;) ).

Above is just some of the fun stuff I’m using to keep you updated – going clockwise-ish from left, that’s my cell phone while I’m here, point-and-shoot, laptop, Flip for video clips, my DSLR with my main lens attached, my nifty-fifty lens, plug adapter, extra battery, 2 battery chargers, and my power cord.

As you can see, I take food VERY seriously. So stop back on the blog and my other pages for updates; you won’t regret it! :)

February 06, 2011 By: Serena Category: NoshGirl

I’m NoshGirl, and when it comes to contests (and desserts) I don’t mess around…

Hellooooo readers!  Checking in from warm (ok, make that hot), sunny Singapore!  Posting will be a little lighter this week, but I just HAD to check in because I’ve got some exciting stuff going on!  As some of you know, late last year I had participated in and WON first place in the Marx Food Mushroom Recipe Challenge.  In addition to shipments of yummilicious fresh wild mushrooms, I’m now a participant competing against 28 other food bloggers in the Marx Foods Ridiculously Delicious Challenge! (dum dum DUM!)

So what is so RIDICULOUSLY delicious about this challenge?
