Cooking Class: Israeli Cuisine

June 30, 2011 By: Serena Category: Events, Israeli

I recently had the pleasure of attending a DeGustibus cooking demonstration by Chef Michael Solomonov, who specializes in Israeli cuisine.  His Philadelphia restaurant, Zahav, is renowned, with Chef Michael recently honored with a James Beard Foundation award. I’ve thus far had limited exposure to Israeli cuisine, but I loved what I’ve tried – so I was especially looking forward to this class.

You could see that the demonstration set-up was quite nice, with the requisite angled mirror:

I Joined a CSA!

If you’ve been following my tweets, you may have noticed my veggie-focused tweets this past week.  Yes, I, the extremely veggie averse, have joined a CSA!  A CSA, or “Community Supported Agriculture,” gives city dwellers like myself access to fresh, organic produce at a lower price than offered at my local supermarket.  The CSA I joined, Fulton Market CSA, partners with Norwich Meadows Farm, a few hours away from NYC.  Members pay up-front a few months before the growing season, and the farm uses those funds to purchase seeds and supplies.  In return, we get 22 weeks of fresh produce.  One of my favorite things thus far is the element of surprise; you never know what you’ll get each week!

Last week was my first pick-up:

Happy Thursday – it’s almost the weeeekend!  And you know what that means: time for another NoshGirl Cross Country Party, of course!  Last month, more than thirty readers from all over attended the Frozen Yogurt party.  This month, the theme is a bit different.

You see, I’ve been working some late nights behind the scenes, prepping for this blog’s switch from Blogger to WordPress (yay!).  Joy, of How Joyful Design Studio, put together an awesome new look for Big Apple Nosh – hopefully if everything goes smoothly I’ll reveal it to you next week!  In the mean time, since I’ll be toiling away this weekend, I thought it only fitting that the buzzfood for this month’s NoshGirl Party was:

Japanese: BONDST

June 20, 2011 By: Serena Category: 2_Apples, Japanese

I recently checked out the Japanese restaurant BONDST with a few eating buddies.  We partook in the omakase, or Chef’s selection, and sat at the sushi bar – one of my favorite seats in the house.  Presented with course after course of artfully prepared cuisine, I was stuffed at the end.  But how did the food measure up?

June 14, 2011 By: Serena Category: Dessert, NoshGirl_Fave

Last week I tweeted that I found the best caramels in the world. Now I know that “best” and other superlatives can be highly subjective. But I literally have never tasted better caramels than Béquet Confections‘ Celtic Sea Salt caramels.

I hadn’t heard of Béquet Confections until…
