American: Hudson Hall

Eating Out

I recently had a coupon to try Hudson Hall, located in the Hudson Hotel.  I’ve visited the swanky hotel bar before (it looks like something out of ABC Carpet and Home) as well as dined at the Hall a few years ago.  My coupon was good for 2 cocktails and four dishes, so I treated an eating buddy to a light tapas-style dinner.

The first thing I noticed was that the format of Hudson Hall had changed – instead of traditional waiter service, the dishes were self-serve, almost like a fancier, trendy cafeteria:

After perusing the dishes thoroughly (we had to pick the best four!), my eating buddy and I started with the braised short ribs – cooked till mouthwateringly buttery, these were tender and juicy.

We next tried the chicken – I admit I’m always wary of chicken; I’ve had way too many a dry chicken in my life.  However, the crispy skin on this dish was promising:

and it delivered – the chicken was juicy, flavorful and delicious.

The cornmeal crusted soft shell crab then caught my eye:

It’s hard to tell in this photo, but this crab was ginormous!  Since it was soft shell, I was able to devour it, crispy batter and all. Yum!

We finished off the meal with a stack of chocolate chip nut cookies – these were kept warm under the heat lamps and were melty delicious! (first photo)

Now I wouldn’t say that Hudson Hall had the *best* food you’ll ever have, nor is it the least expensive.  However, if you’re looking for a casual, self-serve style atmosphere that isn’t the Subway across the street nor Per Se down the block, Hudson Hall is a perfectly acceptable option.  If you score a coupon deal, even better ;).  After you finish your meal, make sure to stop by the swank looking bar for some post-dinner people watching!

Fancy self-service at a trendy hotel.  Food is okay, cookies are pretty good.

The pictures are so pretty! Thanks for the sharing your reviews on places to eat. It will help me immensely when picking new places to go.

Is it bad if I say my favorite place for tapas is a place in Madrid that is a hole in the wall and nobody seems to know about except the locals? 🙂

I stayed in the Hudson Hotel during my last trip to Manhattan, but didn’t try out the restaurant. My favorite tapas dish is any type of marinated seafood/ceviche type dish. And patatas bravas, of course 🙂

Interesting! I haven’t seen such a fancy cafeteria before! Love small plates except when one plate is really good and then you wish it was bigger.
