Fun Fact Friday

FunFactFriday

Happy Friday, Noshers!  TGIF – this week has been crazy busy for me; I haven’t had the chance to comment on as many blogs as usual! 🙁 Any plans for the long weekend?

To reduce tears while chopping onions, chop them near an open flame (such as the stove).  Tears no more!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ah! Great tip! I wonder if this would work with a candle b/c I (sadly) don’t have the option for a gas stove. I’ll try it this weekend.

Maybe! It has something to do with the flame sucking up whatever compounds the onion releases before they get to your eyes. Good luck!

Oh how interesting! I wonder why this works? Though…I’m very afraid of fire.

Something about the flame sucking up the bad stuff in onions that makes you tear?

Interesting. I’ve also heard that if you chew gum while you chop, it reduces tears. It works most of the time.

I love you for this tip! Onions are my nemesis. I keep a pair of swimming goggles in the kitchen to prevent tears. Your solution is much more elegant. Have a great weekend!

Great tip- also have a piece of bread in your mouth. Random, but I’ve used it and it works.

My mom swears by her onion goggles from Sur La Table. They look ridiculous but I guess they work. I usually just end up a crying mess. Will definitely give the stove a try!

GREAT tip! I don’t have an issue, but my boyfriend (who is a “man’s man”) cries and cries when he cuts onions, so next time he has to chop them up, I’ll be sure to share this tip! Hope you had a great long weekend, Serena!
