Today’s Fun Fact is one that I’ve grown up always knowing, but it may be new for some of you!

Never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of food – it is considered bad luck in Chinese culture.

Now here’s a pop quiz for you – anyone know the reason?

(I could just tell you right now, but thought it would be fun for you to guess!)

I know why but I am at an unfair advantage since I am Asian. 🙂 I’ll let your other readers guess! 🙂

I learned that through a show on TV Network once when the host was going to a sushi restaurant. She didn’t explain why, though. I’m interested to hear. 🙂

I’ve never heard this rule, but don’t think I’ve ever stuck my chopsticks upright. Now I want to know what it’s bad luck!!!

I think this is true for all ancestor worshiping cultures that use chopsticks.

I’ve never heard this, but have been guilty of it a time or two. Oops! My guess is because “you could poke your eye out!”… but I have a feeling that’s not it. I’m intrigued now, especially about the ancestor worship aspect!

It resembles incense and can represent death.

I’m not sure, but I think I once heard that it’s bad luck because it’s disrespectful to the animal to stab the food? Or I could be totally full of it.

Some hinted at this before, but the answer is – chopsticks should not be stuck upright in a bowl of food because it resembles the incense-burning ritual of funerals.

    Now you know!
