Happy Tuesday, Noshers! Last week I attended an event focused on one of my favorite (but I feel often overlooked) fruits – the round, fuzzy kiwi. To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect when Zespri® Kiwifruit approached me about an event all about the kiwi! But I’m glad I decided to check it out.
I hadn’t heard of Zespri before this event, but I learned a lot about this organization. Zespri is the official brand name for New Zealand kiwifruit, and the organization is actually owned by the 2,500+ kiwifruit growers of New Zealand, who together produce more than 100 million trays of kiwi fruit each year! I had no idea – my Kiwi readers, I’m assuming you’ve heard of Zespri before though! 🙂
There were several stations around which we rotated – the first that I rotated through was the Kiwifruit Tasting Stations, where I had the chance to sample the more familiar green fruit as well as the new Zespri SunGold.
All set for kiwi tasting!
While I generally have had pretty tart (and sometimes borderline sour) kiwi, the green Zespri product I had was super sweet! Apparently the Zespri growers are incentivized to leave the fruit on the tree longer so that it ripens to optimal sweetness. The sweeter the fruit, the better compensated the grower.
The traditional green variety with a “spife” – (spoon and knife) to eat the kiwi after cutting it in half.
The Zespri SunGolds were even sweeter than the traditional green – the juice was just dripping from my chin!
I next visited a station called “A Closer Look at Zespri,” where native New Zealander and kiwifruit expert (I know, I didn’t know there was such a thing either!) Glen Arrowsmith spoke to us about the Zespri brand, its origins, and its newest projects.
I rounded out my visit with a stop at the Nutrition Station, where we discussed the nutritional value of kiwi as well as ways to incorporate it into everyday cooking, such as toppings for yogurt parfaits and fruit salsa for a fish dish.
I really enjoyed the Zespri grown kiwifruit and will definitely be keeping an eye out for the Zespri sticker when I shop for kiwis. And I’ll be keeping an especial eye out for the SunGold variety because those are deeeelish! Thanks, Zespri, for introducing me to real New Zealand grown kiwifruit!
Have you heard of Zespri before? Have you every tried (or heard of) golden kiwi?
