Burgers: Town Topic

Eating Out, Food

town-topic-kc-1 Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down…

Juuuust kidding – but who doesn’t like a little Fresh Prince reference every now and again?

This IS a story, however, of an old-school burger joint here in KC that reminds me of one of my favorite slider dives in NJ – White Manna.  Like White Manna, Town Topic in KC is a no-frills, not-dressed-to-impress, counter-top seating only hole-in-the-wall that has won the hearts and stomachs of many.

As you can see, the exterior is not much to look at…. Continue Reading

Chicago: Doughnut Vault

Eating Out, Food

doughnut-vault-chicago-1

Shut up and take my money!  Yes, I may or may not have said this (or at least felt it) when I stepped into Chicago’s Doughnut Vault during my recent visit to the Windy City.  In today’s short but sweet post, I’m happy to share these doughnuts that were not only amazingly delicious but also as big as my FACE. Literally located in a teeny tiny vault space, Doughnut Vault offers a small but well-curated doughnut menu.   The menu of course offers fan favorite glazed (in vanilla, chocolate, and chestnut), a seasonal jelly filled doughnut, buttermilk old fashioned, a gingerbread stack, doughnut holes, an apple fritter, and a rotating daily special.  Short of ordering them all, what’s a girl to do? Chicago: Acadia

Eating Out, Food

acadia-chicago-16A few weeks ago, I made a short weekend trip to Chicago – one of my favorite cities in the world!  I know I’m from NYC and now live in KC, but Chicago is seriously amazing – the extensive food, arts, and culture scene would keep me busy for ages.  Not to mention that the city itself is picturesque, with its location right on the lake.  I can’t wait to make a return visit!

Although our schedule was pretty packed, we did have an evening free for an indulgent dinner. We were lucky enough to score reservations for Acadia, which not only received two Michelin stars, James Beard recognition, and numerous distinction, but also has a reputation for delicious yet unpretentious fare presented in a welcoming, non-stuffy setting. We were psyched for the experience!  And since we were making the trip, we went with the 10-course tasting menu. I mean, why not!

My eating buddy for the evening and I both agreed after the meal that it was one of the best tasting menu experiences either of us has had. So, I can’t wait to share my photos with you! Unfortunately, the printed tasting menu lists only the featured ingredient of each course, so the details I provide below are from my memory.  But, let’s be real here – you’re mostly here for the pictures anyway, right?  Let’s get started then 🙂 Continue Reading

Kansas City: Shio Ramen

Eating Out, Food

Shio-Ramen-6

One thing that’s been pretty fun (and delicious) here in Kansas City is the recent rise in popularity of ramen shops.  When I lived in NYC, I had my pick of ramen joints, with varying degrees of quality and popularity, from “sure, I’ll pay 6 bucks for izakaya ramen at 2am” to “omgggg Ippudo best ramen EVER!”  When I moved to the Midwest last year, I was pleasantly surprised with my go-to ramen joint here in KC, the relatively new Columbus Park Ramen shop. Their tonkatsu ramen is the bomb!  However, recently Shio Ramen Shop opened up, and I knew I had to try it out. So which noodles reigned supreme? Read on to find out. Continue Reading

Green Dirt Farm Creamery – Grand Opening!

Eating Out

I love these little sheep that greeted me on the way in!

Oh happy day, Noshers!  Today I’m excited to share the grand opening of Green Dirt Farm Creamery & Terra Vox Tasting Room. I attended their sneak preview last week and I was super impressed with the space, the team, and oh my goodness the CHEESE! I shouldn’t have been surprised, as Green Dirt Farm makes some pretty amazing sheep’s milk cheeses and yogurts that are carried and served by fan favorites such as Whole Foods, Cosentino’s, and  The Farmhouse.  As you can see, there was a ton to choose from – just take a look at those chalkboard menus: Continue Reading
