4th of July Cupcake Decorating with Sprouts!

Cooking / Eating In, Events / Giveaways / Partnerships

Happy Wednesday, Noshers!  I recently partnered with Sprouts market for a 4th of July DIY project, where I was given free reign to come up with my own DIY activity related to the holiday. I thought and thought, but the answer was pretty obvious – patriotic CUPCAKES!! I love baking, decorating and most importantly eating sweets, so this was a perfect fit.  Today I’ll be walking you through some cute and patriotic cupcake designs just in time for the holiday :).

But first, let me just rave about how awesome new-to-me Sprouts is – coming from the NYC/NJ area, I’d never been to a Sprouts before.  When I made my way to my local Sprouts to purchase ingredients for this project, I was pleasantly surprised and super impressed with the store – high quality produce at amazing prices, hard-to-find fruit (including my favorite cotton candy grapes, which I could only find at Whole Foods in NYC), their own brand for staples such as cereal, granola, cocoa, and an awesome selection of organic ingredients.  I admit I wasn’t familiar with Sprouts prior to this shopping trip, but I’ll definitely be returning.

Now onto the cupcakes! Continue Reading

Kansas City: Cupcake A La Mode (Bakery)

Eating Out

Well stick a fork in me and call me basic, because this girl friggin’ LOVES cupcakes.  I know, I know – the cupcake craze started years ago, and some might say has since been out-shined by the doughnut craze, the cold brew craze, the [insert artisan handcrafted food here] craze – and don’t get me wrong, I will gladly eat/drink all of these things.  But to me, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of a travel-sized, portioned-for-one, perfect-frosting-to-cake-ratio cupcake.  In NYC, I relied heavily on Magnolia (two blocks from my building in NYC – dangerous!!), Sprinkles, and Sugar Sweet Sunshine.  Here in KC, I’ve discovered Cupcake A La Mode

I admit I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to cupcakes – my absolute favorite is vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. Some may call that boring; I just say – a combination so simply perfect needs no embellishment.  So, I was pleasantly surprised with the PB&J cupcake (bottom left) that was calling my name. Um, peanut butter frosting? Yes please.  Equally delicious (though second to the PB&J) was the vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. Sign me up. Yum.

Cupcake A La Mode has a multitude of cupcake flavors, and I’ve only tried a few.  Obviously, I have my work cut out for me.  For the sake of blog integrity, yes, I will go back and try the other flavors and report back. You’re welcome!

Who doesn’t like a good bacon weave?

Happy FRIDAY, Noshers!  Wow.  Are you guys excited for the Super Bowl?  I admit I’m not the biggest sports person (those that know me would say that’s a HUGE understatement), but if there’s anything I like it’s the excuse to make tons of food.  All right, we’re having a teeny tiny party (read – 2 people, 1 dog) but making way too much food runs in my family – just ask my Mom.  I figure if there’s once a year when I can make lots of food that I would normally never make, it would be the once a year (more or less) I watch football….right?

In the past few years, I’ve really been trying to eat healthier – shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store versus buying more processed foods, and my edited grocery shopping habits have made me feel a lot better! Don’t get me wrong – I like a good fancy cheese and charcuturie plate as much as the next person, but overall I’ve gotten used to the idea of eating more whole, fresh foods.  So, this weekend is a bit of a departure in that a lot of these dishes I’m trying out aren’t exactly “perimeter ingredient” recipes (and full disclosure – I usually don’t make football-shaped foods), but no time like this weekend to try them, right?  Soooo without further ado – I’ll be attempting these recipes this weekend: Continue Reading
