Whether I like it or not (and I’m leaning more towards the “not” side of the scale), it seems like summer is unofficially over.  Just today I checked the weather forecast for NYC, and we’re looking at 5 straight days of rain. Bummer.  While my umbrella and I played a losing battle of chicken against the weather on my walk home, I only wanted one thing – a toasty bowl of noodle soup (“Mmmmm, noodle soup” – brownie points to whoever came name that quote!).  Well, I suck at planning such things ahead because I had a cold gazpacho at home waiting for me. Smooth move.  BUT, this weather reminded me of a recent trip I made to Ichiraku Ramen Bar in the East Village.

Japanese: Hide-Chan

In response to my glowing, 4-apple review of Ippudo, a reader suggested Hide-Chan in midtown as a worthy contender.   Combine this endorsement with a mention of Hide-Chan’s black garlic ramen from another buddy, and I was intrigued.  I do love my carbs, yes.  But a ramen joint worthy of Ippudo’s ranks? Did such a place really exist? I was determined to find out.

I’m a fairy impatient person.  I don’t like waiting and am a huge (HUGE!) fan of reservations.  One of the few foods that I will wait up to 90 minutes for is the Akamaru Modern ramen (above) at Ippudo.  Yes, it is that good.  What makes it worth the wait?  Where do I even begin…
