Big Gay Ice Cream Shop

Eating Out, Food

big-gay-ice-cream-4Almost ten years ago, I spotted an ice cream truck in Union Square that almost wasn’t quite like all the others.  This truck had its menu printed on the side of the truck as expected, with a friendly face behind the window – but plastered on the side of the truck was a colorful rainbow cone graphic with “BIG GAY ICE CREAM” in large print. I was intrigued. I perused the menu and had a tough time deciding between the Dorothy (named after Ms. Zbornak from The Golden Girls, of course) and the Salty Pimp. Decisions decisions! I went with the Salty Pimp – a vanilla soft serve cone injected with dulce de leche and finished with a salty dark chocolate shell. I was a convert.   Continue Reading

Tacombi

Eating Out, Food

tacombi-5

I recently stopped by Tacombi, a super-casual and cute Mexican restaurant in the West Village  (there are locations throughout NYC, actually – with each one decorated slightly differently!).  The indoor/outdoor setup of this place makes it perfect for summer dining and happy hour.  My eating buddy and were seated and perused the menu, where you selected your choices with a golf pencil (is it just me or does holding one of those pencils make you feel like a giant?). Bluestone Lane

Eating Out, Food

Over the past few years, Australian coffee culture has made its way to the states – and along with that, some solid brunch and cafe options. One of these gems is Bluestone Lane, whose locations are popping up all around NYC (and the West Coast…and Pennsylvania, apparently!).  Bluestone Lane offers an extensive coffee and beverage menu, and its cafes are a solid brunch choice.  I recently visited the West Village cafe, which was packed! Thankfully (for everyone involved because hangry me is um, not super fun), we were able to be seated right away. Continue Reading

Celeste

Eating Out, Food

I had first eaten at Celeste years ago, and then promptly forgot its name (I knew the name of the restaurant was a woman’s name, and I kept thinking “Was it Gina? Adrienne’s? Stella?” – all names of *other* restaurants).  So for years, Celeste was in my memory as “That Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side with good Italian food and a woman’s name that only takes cash.”  I fortunately found my way back to Celeste recently, and it was as good as I remembered. Ample Hills

Eating Out, Food

The weather in NYC has been a little temperamental these days, hasn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I love summers in city – but the occasional super hot, high humidity days are a bit tough.  Always looking on the dairy side of life, I used one of these days recently to finally pay a visit to Ample Hills Creamery.  Ample Hills has been around for 7ish years now, but I never had it before last month – I know, a travesty! I stopped by the High Line location, which was, unsurprisingly, packed. Continue Reading
