As I’ve mentioned before, the breakfast options in Kansas City do not disappoint.  While every city has its hits and misses, I have lucked out pretty well in the brunch department here.  Additionally, many of the restaurants here take reservations, and even the ones that don’t often lack the 2 hours waits that I’ve become accustomed to in NYC (is it sad that I am sometimes nostalgic for those insane weights?). One of the standouts I’ve found so far is Urban Table, located right outside KC in Prairie Village, Kansas.  By the way, I was at first intrigued by the fact that I crossed state lines so effortlessly here, then I remembered that I did that all the time while in NYC, where I lived, and NJ, where I grew up.  Pretty much the same deal, right?

Urban Table is about twenty minutes from my place, so the times I’ve gone, I call to make a reservation right when I leave the house, for half an hour later. Easy peasy!

You can see the menu is extensive but not overwhelming:

But what really caught my eye was, of course, the grilled doughnuts (first picture).  I mean doughnuts. On the grill. Topped with smoked bacon praline syrup – need I say more?? The doughnuts were listed under the “For the Table” section, but I’d be lying if I said I ordered them just for myself (and didn’t share).

In the vein of Diet Coke math (you know, you order a pizza but accompany it with a Diet Coke so it’s fewer calories….right?) I also ordered the lime cucumber noodles with goat cheese, snap peas, pea tendrils, and a mint basil lime vinaigrette:

I admit that I was expecting noodles of the carb variety, not the cucumber variety – but it was probably for the best that no carbs were harmed in the making of this dish.  The cucumber noodles were light and refreshing, which reset my palate to eat – you got it – more grilled doughnuts.

Urban Table gets pretty crowded on the weekends, but wait has not been ridiculous so far, and they do take reservations.  If you do visit, try the doughnuts – and don’t be afraid to get your own portion!
